Madeline A. Mabrey, 99, of Kenton, passed away at her residence surrounded by family on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018.
She was born Dec. 8, 1919, in Hardin County to the late William and Ermil Jones Oates. On Feb. 22, 1947, she married Stuart Mabrey who preceded her in death Jan. 13, 1964.
She is survived by a son, Bill (Cindy) Mabrey of Bellefontaine; a daughter, Marsha (Rick) Gardner of Kenton; four grandchildren, Jeff (Stephanie) Mabrey of Findlay, Michelle (Chris) Brooks of Kenton, Kelly (Art) Caudill of Bellefontaine and Nicole (Matt) Brim of Kenton; great-grandchildren, MacKenzie Brooks, Tyler Caudill, Alex Caudill, Carter Caudill, Aven Caudill and Tristan Long; and a sister, Virginia (Russ) Shepherd.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Arhl and Guy Oates.
She was a 1937 graduate of Forest High School and attended Marion Business College for two years. She worked as a secretary to the superintendent of the Hardin County Schools for 13 years and the Kenton City Schools for 23 years. After retirement in 1993, she enjoyed traveling in most of the states and most of all, spending time with her family. She also enjoyed the outdoors and working in her yard. She was an avid fan of OSU and the Reds, but most of all, the Kenton Wildcats. She attended their football games until she could no longer make it to the top of the bleachers. Madeline was a member of the First Christian Church in Kenton. She also was the dogsitter to many of the “granddogs” over the years.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Schindewolf-Stout-Crates funeral Home, Kenton, where calling begins at 11 a.m. prior to the service. Private graveside services will be held in the Dunkirk Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Kenton Wildcat Athletic Boosters and the James Cancer Center at OSU Wexner Medical Center, Columbus.
