Eric S. Oberly, 33, of 524 S. Madriver St., who reportedly crashed a stolen car into a wooden patio at LugNuts, 6748 Lima St., Huntsville, around 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, has been charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department served the warrants Thursday while Oberly was lodged in the Logan County Jail. He also has been charged with failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.
The suspect was initially transported from the crash scene by Huntsville EMS to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment of injuries. He was later transferred to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus for further treatment.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office said when Oberly was removed from the crashed vehicle, he appeared to be under the influence of some kind of stimulant, and search warrants will be served for his medical records to determine if he was impaired at the time of the crash.
Police report Oberly allegedly drove off in 2009 Honda Accord left unattended at Speedway, 600 E. Sandusky Ave.
Before an alert of the stolen vehicle could be relayed to area departments, an officer of the Russells Point Police Department attempted to stop Oberly for running a stop sign.
Oberly then fled at extremely high speeds, leaving the Russells Point corporation limit east of State Route 366 and continuing across State Route 117 to County Road 100.
He then lost control and left the roadway, driving over a mailbox and through several yards before turning back toward S.R. 117.
When re-entering the roadway, the suspect vehicle struck the left front fender of the Russells Point police cruiser and then turned southbound onto S.R. 117 toward Huntsville. Washington Township Police Department officers also joined in the pursuit.
Authorities report the suspect entered the Huntsville corporation limits at excessive speeds before The car went off the left side of Lima Street and into the parking lot of LugNuts, driving over a parking stall and striking the wood patio area, which was heavily damaged from the impact.
Damage also was heavy to the stolen car, which was towed from the scene.
Other warrants served this week included:
• Mark H. Spoerl, 40, of Springfield: failure to appear; and
• Bethany L. Lasseter, 25, of 7756 Pontiac St., Huntsville: failure to appear.
