Voting takes place throughout this month prior to Jan. 31 auction
Two years ago, Craft, Paper, Scissors owner Karen Funderburgh treasured the experience of participating as one of a number of celebrity artists in the 2018 Not So Bad Art By Good People contest hosted by the Logan County Art League. This month, with the return of the fourth annual event after a one-year hiatus, her shop is serving as the display point and voting location for all of the creative entries in a variety of mediums — from watercolor and acrylic paintings to a wood-working piece and ceramics.
“These are the kinds of things I enjoy,” she said Friday while looking through each of the 2020 entries with Logan County Art League President Karen Feltham.
“I love drawing inspiration from other people and being able to give them ideas as well. When people come into my shop, I love seeing the projects they’re working on and giving them insights on what to try next.”
For her Not So Bad Art By Good People mixed media entry two years ago entitled “Breaking Free,” Mrs. Funderburgh used Sculpey clay to form a colorful butterfly with a mixed media background of tissue paper and acrylic paint.
“The butterfly looked like it was literally coming off the canvas, thus the ‘breaking free,’” she said. “Working with mixed media art and paper has become a passion of mine.”
The public is invited to her art supply and scrapbooking studio at 142 W. Columbus Ave., Bellefontaine, to check out the display of pieces by 10 local celebrity “Not So Bad Artists,” which began Friday continues through Jan. 31 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Individuals can cast their votes for their favorite pieces for $1 each. There are no restrictions on the number of times a person can vote, Mrs. Feltham noted.
“We always love seeing the different pieces that the celebrity artists come up with each year,” the art league president said. “It’s also been a wonderful opportunity for our Logan County Art League artists to mentor and inspire creativity in others in our country, and to let people in the community know a little more about our organization.”
A People’s Choice Award and trophy will be presented to the artist who garners the most votes at the upcoming auction of the pieces, slated for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at the Bellefontaine VFW, 216 Orchard Ave. The public is invited to attend the auction and participate free of charge.
This year’s Not So Bad Artists” who have been hard at work to create their entries throughout the last several months with their art league mentors are: Carrie Brown, hair stylist at Indian Lake; Justin Dinovo of Citizens Federal Savings & Loan; Alan D. Hadley; Krista Harmon; Jeramy Fitzpatrick of Brewfontaine; Mackenzie Myers of The Logan County Farmers’ Market and Holland Theatre; Pastor Bryan Meadows from the Huntsville United Methodist Church; Vicki Rapp from Mary Rutan Hospital public relations; Dee Dee Rickets, owner of Me & Company; and Ashley Sloan, Huntsville United Methodist Church youth pastor.
Prior to the 7 p.m. auction Jan. 31, doors open at 5 p.m. at the Bellefontaine VFW for final voting and drinks. A catered dinner is served at 6 p.m. for pre-registered guests, who need to make reservations by Jan. 22.
The funds raised both through the auction and the voting will be used by the Logan County Art League to benefit and encourage the growth of the visual arts in the Logan County area.
