Neurologist Xiaomei Gao-Hickman, M.D., recently joined the medical staff at Mary Rutan Hospital.

Dr. Gao-Hickman’s arrival in Logan County helps meet the need for a highly skilled neurologist in the area and demonstrates the hospital’s ongoing commitment to meeting the medical needs of the region, Dr. Grant Varian, chief medical officer, said in a release.

“Dr. Gao-Hickman is eager to bring her knowledge in neurology to the community. Having Dr. Gao-Hickman as a member of our medical staff and practicing in our community will only further enhance the medical care and services we provide to our patients and the region.”

As a general neurologist, Dr. Gao-Hickman will diagnose and treat conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and migraine headaches.

She also interprets electroencephalography for diagnosis of epilepsy and performs electromyography for the diagnosis of neuropathy, muscular disorders and cervical or lumbar pinched nerves.

Before coming to Bellefontaine, Dr. Gao-Hickman served as medical director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit in Ohio, medical director of stroke centers in Florida and medical director of neurological services in Nebraska.

She finished her first year Ph.D. program in microbiology and immunology from West Virginia University Medical Center and went on to complete her internship and residency in neurology at The Ohio State University Medical Center and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

“I’ve been practicing for more than 12 years, most recently in Nebraska. Coming back to Central Ohio, where my husband grew up, has been a great opportunity for our family and I am thrilled to be able to bring my professional skills to the people of Logan County,” Dr. Gao-Hickman said.

The neurologist is now seeing patients as well as offering same-week appointments at the Mary Rutan Hospital Ambulatory Care Center located at 2160 Ewing Crawfis Circle. Call 651-6962 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
