Second murder suspect arrested

SIDNEY (AP) — A second suspect has been arrested in the beating death of a man on New Year's Day.

Shelby County Sheriff's deputies arrested Christopher Fitzpatrick, 22, of Sidney, on Tuesday. Fitzpatrick was charged with murder and placed in the Shelby County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning in Sidney Municipal Court.

Timothy G. Spranger Jr., 33, of Piqua, was arrested Thursday and charged with murder in connection with the same incident. Spranger and Fitzpatrick are accused in the death of David Michael, 33, of Sidney. Deputies said Michael was at a party in the 9000 block of Lehman Road in Washington Township, near Sidney, when Spranger assaulted him. Michael was struck several times inside the house, according to information determined during the initial investigation. He was struck again outside the house as he tried to get away from Spranger.

Michael was transported by private vehicle to Wilson Memorial Hospital, where staff contacted the Sheriff's Office to notify them of the incident. Michael died a short time later as a result of his injuries.

Following the altercation, Spranger reportedly fled from the scene, and he was apprehended later Thursday morning without incident near Lockington by sheriff's deputies.

Spranger remains in the jail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning in Municipal Court.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact Detective Chris Brown, 937-494-2105, or Chief Deputy Jim Frye, 937-494-2117.
