Schane E. Schafer, 46, of 11217 Shawnee Path, Lakeview, was charged with carrying concealed weapons, and David J. Engard, 33, of Leipsic, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs as a result of an incident Tuesday evening in Huntsville.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office on patrol in the village about 9:20 p.m. in the area of Lug Nuts, 6748 Lima St., observed two men on motorcycles preparing to leave the drive thru parking lot.
They noticed that Engard appeared to have difficulty mounting his motorcycle and said he was unsteady on his feet. Deputies observed Engard nearly laid the bike down on the ground and then went left of center once he pulled onto Lima Street.
A traffic stop was initiated at the Huntsville Marathon gas station, 6670 Lima St., and deputies observed that Engard appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine or some kind of stimulant. He refused to submit to field sobriety tests.
Deputies also spoke with the second defendant, Schafer, who had an active warrant for his arrest for grand theft of a motor vehicle. He refused a consent search of his motorcycle. However, the Washington Township canine unit responded to the scene and alerted on his motorcycle. A loaded revolver was located in the rear left saddle bag of the vehicle.
Schafer was arrested on the warrant and for the weapons charge, and a review of improper handling of a firearm will be forwarded to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Engard also was arrested and both men were lodged in the Logan County Jail. At the jail, Engard submitted to a urine screen, with a positive result for THC, ecstasy, methamphetamine, benzodiazepine, suboxone, amphetamines and opiates.
Officers of the Russells Point Police Department also assisted at the scene.
