URBANA — Attorneys for the West Liberty-Salem school shooter will have a chance in September to argue their client did not deserve a 23 1⁄2-year sentence.
Champaign County Common Pleas Court Judge Nick Selvaggio set a hearing date of Sept. 3 for Ely Serna, 19, who entered guilty pleas in May 2018 to attempted murder, felonious assault and inducing panic.
The initial appeal was filed shortly after Selvaggio sentenced Serna to prison.
Serna assembled a shotgun at school and opened fire on classmates. Logan Cole was shot twice in the attack and survived.
Serna was 17 at the time of the Jan. 20, 2017, shooting which Serna’s appeals attorneys believe the judge did not adequately consider.
