Income tax levy headed to November ballot

Benjamin Logan Schools’ board of education in a regular meeting Wednesday approved a resolution to proceed with an income tax levy question on the Nov. 5 ballot.

The proposed 1.5 percent income tax, “is necessary to raise an additional sum of $3,341,635 for the purpose of providing for the current operating expenses of the school district,” according to the resolution approved by school board members.

The levy as proposed will be for a “continuing period of time.” Board members discussed Wednesday whether they should pursue a continuing levy, or set it for a specific number of years.

Board members ultimately decided to ask voters for a continuing levy, and will make the pitch to their constituents that they will reduce the percent of the income tax in the future, should the district’s financial picture change.

If approved, the tax would apply toward earned income, and would not affect retirees’ or other fixed incomes.
