Despite a challenging growing season with very little rain during recent months, a veteran exhibitor at the open flower show said Mother Nature provided a little assistance to her this week that lent itself to a best of show rosette.

Rushsylvania resident Judy Bozman won the top artistic design award Friday for her “Mars (The Red Planet)” entry in the celestial-themed portion of the day three show. The deep red velvety daylilies and red canna leaves she selected were ones that she happened to come across Friday morning while looking around her flower beds for some special specimens.
“I went outside this morning, and there was dew on everything; it was so beautiful,” Mrs. Bozman said. “The canna leaves looked wonderful, and it was like they were already washed. Nature did it all for me.
“Then I found the daylilies as well, and they were the perfect shade of red to complement this black and red container.”
Ohio Association of Garden Clubs Judge Virginia Bowers of Urbana was impressed by the overall look of the piece and the quality of the flowers and foliage.
“The daylilies are extraordinary, and so are the canna leaves. The overall design is very good. The red in the containers ties together with the red veins in the canna leaves.”
