Columbus artist Richard “Duarte” Brown speaks Friday evening during the Mills Brothers mural unveiling at 207 S. Main St., a location facing east Chillicothe Avenue, for the crowd gathered to check out the six-panel piece created by local youths in grades 7-12 during the last year for the LoCo Art sponsored project alongside Brown. The storytelling mural celebrates the chart-topping Mills Brothers, who shattered racial barriers in the early 20th century as they traveled the globe with their unique harmonic sound, and even performed for King George and Queen Mary at the Palladium in London in 1934. LoCo Art co-director Jennifer Davis thanked Brown for his heartfelt partnership for the mural, and expressed appreciation to Todd McCormick from the Logan County History Center and Cassie Hassel, each for sharing with LoCo Art participants about the musical group. Building owner Colton Lowry donated the space for the mural, and Dawson Construction provided the mural installation free of charge. (EXAMINER PHOTO | Mandy Loehr)
