Bellefontaine Municipal Court Judge Ann Beck said memories of her early life in Hawaii are the inspiration for the painting she created for the Logan County Art League’s first “Not So Bad Art by Good People” event.
Bellefontaine Municipal Court Judge Ann E. Beck holds a still life painting of memorabilia from a cherished period of her life spent in Hawaii. She created the painting for the Logan County Art League’s “Not So Bad Art by Good People” event, in which local residents can pay $1 per vote to select the best or worst of 15 paintings created by local community members beginning Jan. 21. “After much deliberation, I set aside my idea to do a sculpture of boots and decided to try to paint some of my favorite things,” Judge Beck wrote. “My piece is a collage of pieces from my life, long ago, in Hawaii. It consists of my hat, with a hat band I made out of kukui nut shells, a pair of dancing stones, dancing reeds, a basket of rocks, including a poi pounder and an ulumika disc. Ulumika is a type of yard bowling game. Lastly, the items sit on a piece of kapa cloth, made by my friend’s tutu (auntie).”
With no formal training in art, she chose to work in acrylics at the advice of her art league mentors, Forrest Amidon and Pat Irwin.
She was among 15 local civic-minded individuals chosen to participate in the program.
“I hope I was asked to participate in this program because they believe I am a good person. That’s what I strive for everyday,” she said. “I am also a supporter of arts and culture of all kind: dance, theater, painting, sculpture, weaving etc.”
