Advancing the furthest of any area basketball team, WL-Salem’s girls played in the Division III regional semifinal Wednesday night in Springfield. The Tigers’ success was not overlooked as its best player and coach were honored on the all-district squad.
A 6-4 senior post, Peterson was a major factor for the Tigers inside. She averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds per game along with four blocks per contest. She has signed to play Division I volleyball at the University of Dayton next season.
“It is unbelievable to see the way she’s grown on and off the court since she came in as a freshman,” said WL-Salem head coach Dennis McIntosh. “She was about six foot and skinny as a rail as a freshman. I wasn’t sure what kind of basketball player she would be, but she really worked hard and became a great player for us.”
McIntosh is in his 22nd year as head coach of WL-Salem’s girls team. He led the Tigers to an outright Ohio Heritage Conference championship and earned his second district championship, and the program’s first since 2001.
The Tigers finished 23-4 this season.
