Douglas E. Summers, 26, of 224 Highland St., West Mansfield, was charged Friday with felony counts of felonious assault, domestic violence and menacing by stalking and was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office received a report about 10 a.m. Friday from a family member of Summers’ girlfriend. She told deputies that she had observed bruising on his girlfriend’s face during a FaceTime call, and was concerned about her well-being.
Deputies searched the West Mansfield area for Summers and his girlfriend and were unable to locate them. However, deputies were able to contact Summers via phone and he and his girlfriend responded to the sheriff’s office to speak with deputies.
At the sheriff’s office, deputies spoke with Summers and his girlfriend separately. She told deputies that he had assaulted her the night after he had previously been released from jail. He allegedly choked her to the point where she couldn’t breathe and also threw her up against a wall.
She was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital for a check of her sustained injuries. The defendant was placed under arrest following the interview.
Incident leads to OVI, weapons charges
John J. Lowe, 25, of 7408 Church Road, West Liberty, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle related to an incident late Saturday evening.
Deputies received a report about 11:50 p.m. regarding Lowe allegedly making threats and that he had a firearm. The caller stated he had just left a Zanesfield residence in his vehicle.
Deputies located Lowe’s vehicle in the area of Township Road 192 near State Route 508 and initiated a traffic stop. The defendant came to a stop at 883 S.R. 508.
During the stop, Lowe was ordered by deputies to put his hands in the air, and he eventually complied. He was placed in handcuffs and patted down for weapons. He told deputies that the firearm was in the vehicle.
Officers of the West Liberty Police Department also arrived on the scene, and search Lowe’s vehicle, where a pistol containing a loaded magazine was recovered.
Deputies observed that he displayed signs of intoxication, and the defendant said he had consumed approximately eight to nine beers. He submitted to field sobriety tests and was transported to the jail, where he refused to submit to a chemical breath test.
Deputies noted that he has prior OVI convictions in 2016 and 2017. He also was cited for driving under a 12-point suspension, driving under a non-compliance suspension, failure to reinstate his license and a seat belt violation.
Motorcyclist transported from S.R. 235 crash
Michael W. Vance, 42, of Waynesfield, was transported by Quincy EMS to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney for treatment of suspected minor injuries sustained in a crash Friday afternoon.
Deputies report he was operating a northbound motorcycle on State Route 235 about 12:15 p.m. when he attempted to make a left turn onto County Road 35 and failed to control, and laid the motorcycle down in the roadway.
He was wearing a helmet, and light damage was reported to the motorcycle.
Boat reported stolen
Deputies responded about 10:45 a.m. Friday to Tanner Marine, 14429 State Route 366, on a report of a stolen watercraft
The business owner told deputies that between the hours of 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. that day, unknown subject(s) entered the property and removed a 1988 Sea Nymph aluminum boat and trailer from the parking area. The boat, owned by Michael Fast of Columbus, was going to be stored on the property for the winter.
