‘Great night’ ends with OVI
He was stopped around 1:20 a.m. after an officer on patrol observed a southbound car on Detroit Street between Columbus and Chillicothe avenues. The officers reported the driver was recklessly operating the car with a passenger sitting outside a window.
The officer followed Hatcher as he traveled east to Main Street and then north passing the officer who used an alley to travel to Main. The officer was now southbound and had to turn around to pursue Hatcher. He observed the car travel west on Sandusky Avenue back to southbound Detroit.
Hatcher accelerated and nearly hit a pedestrian at Columbus. He finally pulled into a parking space along Detroit, later claiming he returned to the area to retrieve his debit card from the Beer Vault, 149 W. Columbus Ave.
Upon contact with Hatcher, the officer detected an odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and noted several visible clues he was impaired. Field sobriety tests indicated he was impaired and he was taken into custody.
Hatcher was in the rear seat of the cruiser when the owner of the Beer Vault walked up with his debit card. Hatcher was informed his bill came to $116. Laughing, he told the officer he was buying drinks for others and added, “I had a great night tonight.”
At the department offices, he provided a breathalyzer sample of 0.185. He was released to a sober friend.
