Jeffrey J. Herzog, 41, of Dayton, was charged with possession of methamphetamine related to a traffic stop Thursday evening.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office on patrol on U.S. Route 68 near Township Road 190 about 6:10 p.m. observed a northbound vehicle whose registration did not match the actual vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated.
An officer of the Logan County Unified Drug Task Force conducted the initial contact with the driver, Herzog, and the officer observed that the defendant was extremely nervous and visibly shaking. He was asked to exit the vehicle.
Herzog was questioned about whether there was any illegal substances in the vehicle, and he initially said there was not, and then stated that there was marijuana in the vehicle’s center console.
A glass pipe containing marijuana was seized from the vehicle, and then a probable cause search was conducted. Two baggies containing a white crystal-like substance were recovered. The substance later field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
Herzog told deputies he had forgotten that he had methamphetamine in the vehicle. He stated he last used meth about one month ago. The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Logan County Jail.

Isabella M. Pavoni, 18, of Zanesfield, was transported by Allen Township EMS to Memorial Hospital in Marysville for treatment of suspected minor injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash Thursday.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report she was operating a westbound 2005 Honda CR-V about 3:40 p.m. and stopped at the stop sign on State Route 347 at County Road 144.
She then proceeded into the intersection and struck a northbound 2007 Honda Veracruz operated by Cody R. Storm, 31, of Woodstock.
Storm did not report any injuries. Damage was heavy to both vehicles, which were towed from the scene. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
Pavoni was cited for failure to yield at a stop sign.
• Jonathan W. Dalton, 32, of West Liberty, sustained minor injuries in a one-vehicle rollover crash Sunday and was checked by Huntsville EMS personnel, but he was not transported from the scene.
Deputies report he was operating a southbound 2012 Honda Fit about 5:35 p.m. in the area of 6493 Findlay Street in Huntsville when he went off the right side of the road, struck a yard ornament and a tree. His vehicle began to overturn and it nearly struck a house, deputies said.
Dalton was cited for failure to control. He was wearing his seat belt. Damage was heavy to the vehicle, which was towed from the scene.
• Joe C. Rapp, 31, of West Liberty, was cited with failure to control related to a hit-skip crash Saturday morning.
Deputies and officers of the West Liberty Police Department responded about 7 a.m. to the scene after a caller reported hearing the crash. While the vehicle had left the scene, deputies and officers located a number of car parts at the scene and damage to a utility pole and transformer. Ruts also were observed throughout a side ditch and in a nearby yard.
Deputies report Rapp was operating a westbound 2004 Honda Pilot in the 1100 block of Township Road 174 and went off the left side of the road and then back onto the road.
The vehicle then went off the right side, striking a utility pole broadside, and then left the scene.
The heavily damaged sport utility vehicle was located at Rapp’s residence in West Liberty. Deputies were unable to make contact with him Saturday, but on Sunday, they issued him citations, also for leaving the scene of a crash and no seat belt. Rapp told deputies he had swerved to miss a deer in the road and didn’t have money to call for a tow truck.
Damage was heavy to the sport utility vehicle. No injuries were reported.
