Thomas P. Donnelly, 66, of Springfield, was charged Friday with hunting inside the city limits, discharging a firearm in the city limits and obstructing official business.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department were outside Homecoming Restaurant, 1330 N. Main St., at 5 p.m. dealing with another call when they heard three gunshots come from behind the restaurant.
Donnelly was spotted wearing a hunter orange hat and carrying a shotgun behind a truck repair center near Homecoming. Officers found him on the passenger side of a pickup truck parked next to a camper. He quickly shut the door when he spotted officers.
He admitted to firing his gun but only did so to sight it in and with the permission of the landowner. He told them he thought he was outside the city limits. He claimed he was shooting at the side of a building behind the truck center.
Officers pointed out he was a mere 30 yards from a packed restaurant. Officers found no damage to the building nor any shell casings, but they did find a dead deer in a fresh puddle of blood about 15-20 yards behind the building.
Donnelly claimed he did not know the deer was there when he shot.
Officers contacted the property owner and learned Donnelly was not given permission to be on the property or to hunt it.
He was arrested and lodged in the Logan County Jail. Officers recovered a shotgun and three spent shells from his pickup.
