A Lakeview man was charged with felony counts of obstructing official business and felonious assault, along with misdemeanor counts of inducing panic and using weapons while intoxicated after a stand-off incident Sunday evening in Lakeview, deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office report.
Eric A. Koon, 36, of 13808 W. U.S. Route 33, Lakeview, was lodged in the Logan County Jail, and the incident that ended without any injuries to him or to law enforcement.
Deputies responded about 9:55 p.m. to his residence on a report of a man with a gun.
EMS personnel had been called to the scene previously to investigate a fire alarm.
EMS personnel had reported that a man, later identified as Koon, had brandished a rifle and pointed it at them, allegedly telling them they were trespassing and he “would shoot them.”
A woman on the scene reportedly apologized to the emergency workers, telling them that Koon had been drinking. EMS evacuated the scene after it was reported that it was a false alarm and they were staged with fire personnel back at the Lakeview Fire Department.
Deputies were staged at west U.S. 33 and County Road 87 and they began hearing several gun shots coming from the vicinity of the residence. They said the gunfire stopped briefly, and then began again in a burst of approximately 20 to 25 rounds in rapid succession, giving the indication that a semi-automatic rifle was being utilized.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and Ohio State Highway Patrol units also were called to the scene. Law enforcement shut down the roadway in the area as well for the safety of the public.
Deputies spoke with Koon by telephone several times and asked him to come out unarmed. Deputies eventually did witness the defendant come out of the home and walk toward the road. He was ordered to put arms his up and lay down on his stomach.
The defendant complied with order and was placed under arrest.
A report also will be forwarded to the Logan County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
