The Logan County court system has a gem of judicial learning and lore tucked away in the basement of the current court center that was once the county’s primary library.

But the treasure is not a rare book or valuable artifact, instead, a local judge who has achieved an educational degree few in the legal profession aspire to.
Magistrate W. Thomas Minahan recently graduated with a doctor of philosophy degree in judicial studies from the University of Nevada, Reno, the only university in the nation to offer the advanced degree for judges. He is just the 14th judge nationwide to attain the doctoral degree since it became available in 2001.
He obtained his juris doctorate law degree from Ohio Northern University in 1987 and was appointed magistrate in 1990 by Logan County Common Pleas Judge Mark S. O’Connor.
Not one to throw his hat into the popular election ring required to attain a judgeship, the magistrate said he preferred to pursue career advancement through scholarly pursuits.
“I’m just not a political person,” the magistrate said. “It’s just something I’ve never enjoyed.”
