The Logan County Democratic Party is gearing up for a heated general election and looking to the future with a new party chairman who looks to recruit new members and candidates through events and other outreach activities.
The party met Monday evening and elected Adam Brannon as the new party chairman.
He said his goal is to build on the draw of this year’s presidential primary that saw 2,070 people register to vote as Democrats, which is up from just over 900 in recent years.
“My concern, and I think the concern of the Logan County Democratic Party, is not so much on the national race itself, but looking at the local races in 2017 and going forward,” Mr. Brannon said.
“We have county offices up for election this year and we don’t have any local Democrats on the ballot. There was a day when we had Democrats running for every office and we need to see what we can do to get back to that.”
“The first thing we are going to do is put together information about doing a spring fundraiser dinner for the party.
While the event will likely be in May or early June, a date and location have not yet been set. The party is also looking to reach out to residents in outlying villages by moving their monthly meetings to different towns.
The first will be Monday evening, April 18, but the location has not yet been determined.
“Our monthly meetings, instead of just having them at Council Chambers, we’re going on the road to hopefully get some people in the other towns of Logan County excited about what we are doing,” the new chairman said.
As the presidential general election shapes up, Mr. Brannon and Vice-Chairwoman Kathryn Dougherty said they would like to spread a pro-Democrat message to any voters who do not like the prospect of a Donald Trump presidency.
