A group of local musicians has begun to make a splash on the hard rock and heavy metal scene with a new album and a series of three upcoming multi-state tours.
I, Apollo, a five-member band based out of North Lewisburg, features the talents of lead singer Brendyn Moxley, guitarists Cole Smith and Justin Coleman, drummer Quentin Hurd and bassist Andrew “Droopy” Laird.
Brendyn and Cole, who attended Triad schools together and graduated in 2013 and 2012, respectively, began playing together in early high school and the other members of the band fell into place as they progressed.
“My dad got me a guitar when I was 8,” the band’s frontman said. “My first show was our middle school talent show. I got out there and shredded my favorite song — My Curse by Killswitch Engage. It was just one guitar and a room full of parents.”
Quentin, who grew up around the Dayton area, joked that his first show was a similar experience for him, but his song was Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit.
“Nobody really taught us anything, we just hung out and tried to figure it out on our own,” Cole added.
