The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began recommending the first bivalent COVID-19 Vaccine Booster beginning Sept. 1 for specific age groups.
This updated booster includes protections for Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 spike protein components.
The new Pfizer bivalent boosters (recommended for those aged 12 years and older) and the Moderna bivalent boosters (recommended for individuals aged 18 years and older) are now available at the Logan County Health District, 310 S. Main St.
The new bivalent booster doses provide protection against both the original strain of COVID-19 as well as two of the omicron variants. The previous COVID-19 vaccine doses are monovalent and only protected against the original strain of COVID-19.
Individiuals age 12 years and older are recommended to receive one age-appropriate bivalent mRNA booster dose regardless of primary series product and number of monovalent booster doses previously received.
