Riverside’s girls basketball team clinched a share of the Northwest Central Conference title Monday with a 58-28 victory over visiting Upper Scioto Valley.
The Pirates wrap up the regular season with a 14-5 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the Northwest Central Conference. They shared the league title with Ridgemont.
It is the first league championship for the Riverside girls program since 2010.
“I am so proud of these girls,” said head coach Rod Yoder. “It’s been a crazy season with COVID, but these girls have worked hard since Day 1. We put in some new offensive things this year and they really bought in, and they have also worked really hard on defense. They truly enjoy playing defense.”
There was not very much suspense in Monday’s game as the Pirates jumped out to a 16-4 lead after one quarter and a 30-15 advantage at halftime.
Riverside increased its cushion to 27 points (45-18) after three quarters.
The Pirates have several standouts that have taken turns as the scoring leader this season. It was Kirstin Schlumbohm that led the way Monday, pouring in a game-high 24 points.
Lauryn Sanford contributed 14 points and Olivia Perk added eight points.
“We have a lot of girls that have played a lot of basketball,” said Yoder. “There is no question that experience factor has been a big help in keeping up our consistency during a crazy season like we’ve had.”
There was no junior varsity game.
Riverside will enter tournament action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Russia at Sidney High School.
