Bellefontaine’s softball team had its bats clicking at the plate Monday, but came up short against visiting Springfield Shawnee 9-5 in a Central Buckeye Conference contest at Blue Jacket Park.
“I was very proud of how well our girls hit and I hope they use this momentum going forward,” said BHS head coach Katie Buffkin. “We had one bad defensive inning where we gave up seven runs that really hurt us, otherwise it was a very close game.”
The Chiefs fall to 3-9 overall and 3-4 in the Kenton Trail division as the Braves move to 8-4, 6-1.
Shawnee took control with seven runs in the top of the third inning. Bellefontaine came back with two runs in the bottom of the third to trail 7-2.
The Braves scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning, while the Chiefs matched that with two runs in the bottom of the frame for a 9-4 score.
Bellefontaine pushed across another run in the bottom of the sixth, but could not get any closer.
The Chiefs outhit the Braves 11-10. Caitlin Hollar and Emily Mitchell each went 3-3 to spark the Chieftain offense and Shelby Raney added a double.
