Bellefontaine’s softball team received a strong pitching performance from junior Tayteum Vigansky and some timely hitting for a 7-1 victory over host Riverside on Monday.
The Chiefs are now 1-1, while the Pirates are 0-1.
“We were hurt by too many defensive errors,” said Riverside head coach Andy Phelps. “Bellefontaine took advantage of our mistakes. Tayteum is a very good pitcher and I knew we had to keep them off the scoreboard to have a chance. Jenna (Woods) pitched a good game for us. Her defense just didn’t help her.”
Vigansky struck out 13 and gave up just three hits. She also had two hits at the plate.
Emma Crabtree contributed a pair of hits as well for the Chiefs.
Alaina Snow, Sierra Snow and Woods each had hits for the Pirates.
Bellefontaine jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning and went up 2-0 after the top of the third.
Riverside plated its lone run in the bottom of the third to make the score 2-1.
The Chiefs pulled away in the later innings with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Bellefontaine is back in action today at home against Lima Shawnee and Riverside hosts Russia this afternoon.
