Bellefontaine Intermediate students issued 1,000 acts challenge
Area residents should be prepared to be surprised in the next month with special treats, thank you cards or other thoughtful words and creative gestures, as Bellefontaine Intermediate School pupils kicked off a challenge Wednesday that was inspired by two students’ acts of kindness.
Fourth-grader Jack Varner and fifth-grader Montanna Buck spoke to their peers during an assembly that happened to coincide with Random Acts of Kindness Day in the U.S., Feb. 17.
School Co-Principals Krista Adelsberger and Lynda Holycross heard about the pair’s actions, and to continue the benevolence, they issued a challenge to the 550 third-, fourth- and fifth-graders to complete 1,000 random acts of kindness by March 18, the last day before spring break.
The kind actions will be tallied in the school cafeteria on 40 bucket posters, with the goal of filling each poster with at least 25 kindness “drops” describing the different activities.
During her speech, Montanna explained that she celebrated her 11th birthday Feb. 2 by completing 11 acts of kindness in the Bellefontaine area.
“I had volunteered at Logan Acres (Care Center) during the summer by doing crafts with residents each week. I really liked that a lot, and I decided I wanted to do something similar for my birthday to help my community,” she said.
