Joseph “Joe” Slater, 78 of Bellefontaine passed away Thursday evening, May 19, 2022, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
Joe was born March 9, 1944 in Bellefontaine, OH to the late William H. and Lillian (Treu) Slater of Belle Center. On May 9, 1987 in Saratoga, NY, he married Sharon K. Thompson, who survives.
Joe was a 1962 graduate of Bellefontaine High School. He was a lifetime member of the NRA (National Rifle Association.) Joe was self-employed in the structural steel industry for many years and retired in 2009. He was a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, loved to hunt, fish and the outdoor life. He enjoyed cooking holiday meals for his family members. He also loved to mushroom hunt and always wore a mushroom necklace.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Sharon K. Slater; sons, Joseph A. (Angel) Slater Jr. of Springfield, OH, Pete (Jule Shnell) Slater of Cincinnati, OH and Cody (Rashell) Slater of Dayton, OH; daughter, Laurie Jorgenson of Toma, WI; his sister Vickie Slater Murphy of Urbana, OH, grandchildren and great- grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; uncle, James Treu of Sparta, WI.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents and several other loving family members.
Pastor Brian Wonn of the Urbana First Baptist Church will officiate a Funeral Service at noon Thursday, May 26, at Jennings Farley & Seeley Funeral Home & Crematory. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A private family burial will take place in Harper Cemetery.
