The Central Buckeye Conference will be getting a new look over the next few years as teams move divisions and new teams join the league.
Jonathan Alder unanimously voted Monday to join the CBC during its Board of Education meeting. The Pioneers will compete in the Kenton Trail division starting in 2017-18.
“Jonathan Alder is a great fit for the CBC,” said BHS Athletic Director Matt Comstock. “They have quality programs in both boys and girls sports and tremendous community support for their athletic programs.”
The Mid Ohio Athletic Conference, which was established in 1990, is now dissolving and that has left numerous teams looking for other leagues to join.
Jonathan Alder is coming off conference championships in football, volleyball, softball, girls cross country, girls soccer, boys bowling and boys tennis. In football, the Pioneers went 9-1 last season and reached the state playoffs.
“Although Jonathan Alder is smaller (enrollment-wise) than some of our current members, they are looking forward to playing in the Kenton Trail division and the level of competition that brings.”
Tippecanoe and Stebbins are currently in their last year with the CBC. The Red Devils and Indians are joining the Greater Western Ohio Conference next season. Greenon also chose to leave the CBC and is joining the Ohio Heritage Conference in 2017-18.
That will make the CBC a 10-team league for one season starting this fall. Urbana will move from the Mad River division to the Kenton Trail division for one season, creating two five-team divisions, and then return to the Mad River division once Jonathan Alder joins the league.
Starting in 2017-18 the CBC will be a 10-team conference split into two divisions. The Kenton Trail division will consist of Bellefontaine, Jonathan Alder, Kenton Ridge, Springfield Shawnee and Tecumseh, while the Mad River division will consist of Benjamin Logan, Indian Lake, Graham, Northwestern and Urbana.
