MERRITT |
Cole Merritt was an integral part of an Indian Lake team that advanced to the playoffs for the first time last fall. Now, Merritt is focused on beginning a college career.
Merritt, who ran for over 1,000 yards during his senior season, recently decided to accept an offer to play for Wittenberg University in Springfield.
The Tigers, who are led by veteran head coach Joe Fincham, have a rich history of success at the NCAA Division III level.
“It’s a very special feeling going to the next level,” said Merritt. “It’s been a dream of mine ever since I played for the Little Lakers.
“As for Wittenberg, I like the program, I like the coaches and I want to win a lot of football games.”
Merritt earned first-team Central Buckeye Conference Mad River division honors as a junior and senior. During his final season, he led the Mad River division in rushing yards and helped the Lakers to a league title.
“We know here at Indian Lake what kind of player Cole is and what kind of hard worker he is,” said Indian Lake head football coach Dave Coburn. “Now, he’s going to have to prove that at Wittenberg, which we have every confidence that he’ll be able to do that for the Tigers in Springfield.”
Wittenberg is coming off an 8-2 overall record in 2015. The Tigers finished 7-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wittenberg has been playing football since 1892 and has won over 700 games during its history. The Tigers have won five national championships.
