Eight Indian Lake High School students were chosen to attend Buckeye Boys State, originally scheduled for this month on the campus of Miami University. This year’s event has been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Later this summer, officials will meet to determine if this year’s representatives will be invited to go to the 2021 Buckeye Boys State assembly.
The ILHS students who were selected are: Ryan Braig, son of Kevin and Kristen Braig of Belle Center; Nate Cummins, son of Jason and Carrie Cummins of Lewistown; Jacob King, son of Doug and April King of Huntsville; Lane Mefford, son of Daren and Missy Mefford of Lewistown; Reid Notestine, son of Dan and Tracey Notestine of Bellefontaine; Dylan Rice, son of Steve Rice and Stephanie McCoy of Belle Center; Carson Shepherd, son of Dean and Heather Shepherd of Lakeview; and Josh Staley, son of Scott and Lori Staley of Lewistown.
Buckeye Boys’ State is sponsored by the Huntsville American Legion Post 381.
Participants must meet several qualifications. Candidates must be juniors in high school, interested in government and current events and have an above average scholastic standing. The young men must also demonstrate high moral character, possess strong leadership skills and have a desire for learning.
The purpose of Buckeye Boys’ State is to provide a hands-on experience in the operation of the democratic form of government, the organization of political parties and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio government. At Buckeye Boys’ State, young men learn about city, county and state government through a non-partisan objective education approach.
