Gray, Braves continue frustration for Chieftains

Bellefontaine again had trouble with consistency Friday in a loss to visiting Springfield Shawnee.
The Chiefs could not overcome a rough second quarter, falling to the Braves 53-46 for Bellefontaine’s seventh loss in eight games.
Bellefontaine is now 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail division.
The Braves continued their turnaround with their seventh win in their last eight outings. They improve to 8-6, 4-3.
Senior forward Seth Gray, who came into the night leading the CBC in scoring at 22 points per game, recorded a game-high 20 points.
Bellefontaine led 8-6 after one quarter, but Shawnee snatched the momentum in the second period to lead 27-17 at halftime.
The Braves pushed their lead to 14 points early in the third quarter and they led by 11 (42-31) going into the final eight minutes of play.
The Chiefs chipped away at Shawnee in the fourth quarter, pulling to within four points at 48-44 with 1:45 remaining.
Bellefontaine cut the Braves’ lead to three (49-46) with 59.6 seconds left, but Shawnee made 2-of-4 free throws before Gray got a late steal and bucket to finish the Chiefs off.
Sophomore center Spencer George led the Chiefs with 14 points, while junior forward Hayden Nease had 12 points. Isaiah Miller had eight points and Jacob Rogan chipped in five for the Chiefs.
Ben Logan snaps losing skid
Benjamin Logan’s boys basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak Friday with a 68-55 win over visiting Greenon in Central Buckeye Conference Mad River division action.
The Raiders are now 6-10 overall and 2-5 in the Mad River division.
The Knights, who beat Ben Logan 49-48 earlier this season, slip to 2-13, 1-6.
After the score was tied at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, Greenon slipped ahead 31-29 at halftime.
Ben Logan took command in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 21-7 to open up a 12-point lead (50-38).
The Raiders continued to stay in charge in the final quarter to ice the win.
Grant Ricketts fueled the Raiders’ attack with 26 points. Nolan Robson had 13 points, Austin VanBuskirk scored eight points and Joel Dixon chipped in seven points.
WL-Salem fends off late rally by Cedarville
West Liberty-Salem’s boys basketball team fought off a scrappy Cedarville squad Friday and hung on for a 71-63 Ohio Heritage Conference win.
The Tigers roll their record to 14-2 overall and remain perfect in league play at 9-0. The Indians fall to 8-6, 3-5.
WL-Salem’s offense started fast and jumped out to a 26-13 lead by the end of the first quarter. Cedarville went on an 18-12 run in the second quarter, but still trailed 38-31 at halftime.
The Indians continued to claw their way back in the third quarter with a 16-13 effort. That left the Tigers holding onto a 51-47 lead.
Cedarville started the fourth quarter on its 10-0 run, but was still outscored 20-16 over the entire quarter as the Tigers finished strong.
Dillon Callicoat led the Tigers with 17 points, while Kannon Stillings and Austin Miller each recorded 16 points. Ross Kelley added 14 points and Tyler Louden had eight points.
Lakers hand Hillclimbers their first Mad River division loss
Indian Lake’s boys basketball team gave Urbana its first Central Buckeye Conference Mad River division loss of the season Friday by beating the host Hillclimbers 60-50.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Hillclmbers, who are now 10-5 overall and 6-1 in the Mad River division. The Lakers move to 8-7, 5-2.
Indian Lake was able to get revenge after falling 68-54 in earlier meeting this season with the Hillclimbers.
Urbana held an 11-9 lead at the end of the first period, but Indian Lake moved in front to grab a 23-21 edge at halftime.
In the third quarter, Indian Lake edged Urbana 15-13 to hold a 38-34 lead.
The Lakers then made some big plays down the stretch to keep the Hillclimbers at bay.
Beau Hefner fueled the Lakers with a game-high 24 points. Alex Jacobs tallied 15 points, Troy Carter had nine points and Collin Coburn chipped in eight points.
Fourth-quarter surge sends Pirates past Gophers
Riverside’s boys basketball team rallied with a tremendous fourth-quarter effort to down visiting Ridgemont 61-46 on Friday in Northwest Central Conference play.
The Pirates snapped a five-game losing skid and improve to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the NWCC standings. The Gophers drop to 8-7, 2-3.
Ridgemont led 40-39 after three quarters, but Riverside used a 22-6 run in the final period to claim the victory.
Landon Kelsey powered the Pirates with 21 points. Jesse Kean tallied 13 points and seven rebounds, Trey Helmlinger had eight points and Ross Stevens added seven points.
Individual stats for Ridgemont were not available.
