Lakers squeeze out win over Raiders

When crunch time came, it was Indian Lake’s boys basketball team that came up with the big shots and the big stops Friday at Benjamin Logan.
The Lakers handled the Raiders 66-52 during their first meeting earlier in the season. The second time around, though, it was a much closer affair as Indian Lake pulled away in the final minutes for a 50-45 win in Central Buckeye Conference Mad River division action.
Indian Lake (6-6, 4-2) only led 20-19 at halftime and the score was tied at 40-40 with less than four minutes to go in the game.
The Lakers went on a 10-5 spurt, making key stops and hitting key shots along the way, to finish the game.
A major part the Lakers’ late surge was junior Alex Jacobs, who scored 11 of Indian Lake’s 18 points in the final period.
It was a tight contest from the opening whistle. Indian Lake led just 16-14 after the first quarter ended. The scoring slowed in the second quarter as the Raiders (5-8, 1-5) edged the Lakers 5-4, but still trailed 20-19 at the break.
The Raiders took a 33-32 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
The two teams continued to go toe-to-toe in the fourth quarter before the Lakers used their late burst to grab the win.
Beau Hefner led the Lakers with 16 points, Jacobs finished with 15 points and Parker Grothaus had 12 points.
Grant Ricketts fueled the Raiders with 22 points and Joel Dixon added nine points.
WL-Salem fends off rally by Northeastern
West Liberty-Salem’s boys basketball team grabbed a big lead over host Northeastern Friday, but had to fend off a late rally by the Jets for a 49-47 Ohio Heritage Conference victory.
The Tigers boost their record to 10-2 overall and remain spotless in league play at 7-0. They topped the handled the Jets in their first meeting 59-35. Northeastern is now 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the OHC standings.
WL-Salem raced out to an 18-7 lead after the opening period. Northeastern battled back to outscore WL-Salem 13-10 in the second quarter, but still trailed 28-20 at the break.
The Tigers gained some breathing room in the third quarter with a 12-7 run. That put them on top 40-27 over the Jets.
Northeastern attempted to comeback in the fourth quarter with a 20-9 offensive surge, but came up just two points short.
Kannon Stillingers fueled the Tiger offense with 20 points, Tyler Louden and Austin Miller each had 12 points and Ross Kelley chipped in five points.
Chiefs’ losing skid stopped with strong finish

Everyone chipped in Friday night to get Bellefontaine out of its rut.
Jacob Rogan and Hayden Nease each scored 20 points and Dawsin Tillman had 10 points as the Chiefs broke a four-game losing skid with a 67-54 victory over host Stebbins in a Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail division game.
The Chiefs (5-7, 2-4) avenged an earlier-season loss to the Indians (4-8, 2-4).
A well-played first half by both teams saw the Chiefs take a 34-31 lead into halftime.
Bellefontaine used a late spurt in the third quarter to open up a five-point cushion at 50-45.
Stebbins refused to go quietly. The hosts closed to within two points at the 7:18 mark of the fourth quarter.
However, the Chiefs refused to give up the lead. Bellefontaine finished the game on a 20-9 run to pull away for the victory.
Jack Clement added six points, Isaiah Miller had five points and Spencer George chipped in four for the Chiefs.
W-Goshen surprises Riverside in NWCC
Waynesfield-Goshen’s boys basketball team surprised visiting Riverside for a 47-38 win Friday in Northwest Central Conference action.
The Tigers pick up their second win of the season and are now 2-9 overall and 2-2 in the NWCC. The Pirates slide to 5-5, 2-2.
The score was tied 10-10 after the opening quarter. W-Goshen went on a 10-4 run in the second quarter to grab a 20-14 halftime lead.
The Tigers edged the Pirates 15-13 in the third quarter to hold a 35-27 advantage. W-Goshen used a 12-11 effort in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Landon Kelsey led Riverside’s efforts with 14 points and Shane Crawford added seven points.
Cardinals avenge early season loss to Rams
Triad’s boys basket ball team earned some revenge Friday as it picked up a 62-51 victory over visiting Greeneview in Ohio Heritage Conference action.
The Rams had defeated the Cardinals 57-50 earlier in the season, but in the rematch Triad used a big third quarter to pull away and secure the victory.
The Cardinals are now 9-2 overall and 4-2 in the OHC, while the Rams fall to 4-8, 3-4.
The Rams emerged with a 29-27 advantage at halftime.
A key third quarter saw Triad go on an 18-6 run. That pushed the Cardinals into the driver’s seat with a 45-35 lead.
Thomas O’Neal powered the Cardinals with 19 points, while Colby Watson tallied 13 points and Ryan Boyd added nine points.
