Gordon K. “Mick” Acheson, 88, of Lakeview, OH, passed away Friday, October 22, 2021, at Indian Lake Rehabilitation Center.
Mick was born on March 18, 1933, in Roundhead, OH, a son of the late John Gerald and Mildred Hinkle Acheson. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Acheson, a grandson, Preston Payne, and a stepson, Blynn A. Poland.
Mick is survived by his wife, Sharon Brown Poland Acheson, whom he married in 1978, six children, Robert Acheson of Bradenton, FL, Jody (Terry) Norton of Lima, OH, Michael Acheson of Homosassa, FL, Donald Acheson of Greenville, NC, Jon (Julie) Acheson of Indian Lake, and Kaye (Kevin) Conley of Lima, daughter-in-law, Starr Acheson of Charleston, SC, three stepchildren, Kristi Payne, Blythe Gonzales, and Kelli Dupree, 22 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.
Mick was a 1950 graduate of Roundhead School. He earned his Bachelor of Education in 1956 from Ohio Northern University, where he played baseball and basketball. He earned his Master of Education from Bowling Green State University in 1962 and Honorary Doctor of Business Administration from Ohio Northern University in 2006. Mick was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of ONU Alumni “N” Men, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Indian Lake Moose Lodge #1533 and Indian Lake FOE #3615 and Doyle R. Miller Amvets Post #39.
Mick was inducted in the ONU Hall of Fame in 2001. A dedicated alumnus of ONU, Mick was a strong fundraiser for the university throughout his life. He also had worked as a Lima area radio sportscaster, broadcasting ONU and Bowling Green, and high school, especially, Kenton Wildcat sporting events. Mick started his career teaching and coaching before selling insurance and then real estate. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to started Acheson Realty in 1964. He was instrumental in the development of Lima Eastgate area along I75 and 309. He also operated Acheson’s Resort, a family operation established in 1955 at Indian Lake, for many years. Mick was an avid fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes Athletics.
Pastor Jim Ellington will begin funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, October 29, at Shoffstall Funeral Home, 205 S. Main St, Lakeview. Visitation is Thursday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in Roundhead Cemetery. For those attending, it is requested to wear your favorite Ohio State apparel to honor Mick’s love for the Buckeyes.
Memorial contributions may be given in Mick’s honor to Ohio Northern University Athletics Polar Bear Club or Alzheimer’s Association.
