COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A 17-year-old Ohio girl charged in a robbery that led police to fatally shoot her boyfriend has taken a plea deal that will keep her case in the juvenile system.
The deal required her to admit to juvenile charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated robbery. She originally was charged with delinquency murder after 16-year-old Julius Tate Jr. was killed by Columbus police in December, and prosecutors were seeking to charge her as an adult.
Police say Tate was shot after pointing a gun at an undercover officer during a sting and his girlfriend was involved in the robbery. Ohio law says a person can be charged with murder if an accomplice is killed while committing or fleeing a crime.
Prosecuting and defense attorneys have recommended three years in juvenile prison.
