The girls jumped and cheered and laughed as they tried to work the hula hoop down the line without letting go of their interlocked hands. Though the wind whipped around them Wednesday afternoon, the warmer temperatures made it an ideal day for outdoor activities during the three-day Girl Scout Spring Break Camp, which was hosted by Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek this past week.
“We were able to join Bellefontaine with Urbana for camp this year since they had the same spring break,” Girl Scouts of Logan County community development manager Alexis Taylor said. “So we worked together with Margaret (Piatt).”
They chose the castle because it was a good mid-way location, located at 10051 Township Road 47, West Liberty.
Besides fun games, the camp conducted educational activities, including lessons from a state parks naturalist, an Ohio State University entomologist, Logan County History Center members, West Liberty firefighters and Bellefontaine police officers.
The youths had a chance to interact with unusual insects, such as an Australian walking stick known as the Macleay’s Spectre Stick Insect.
Day campers also learned about the structure, shapes and colors of Piatt Castle, then had the opportunity to build their own castle utilizing blocks.
This year’s camp theme was, “It’s Your Planet, Love It.”
