A group of teens involved in the Logan County Family Court program gathered Tuesday at the LoCo Art’s new Spot For Youth, 130 S. Main St., Suite B105, for a special mini concert to jump start their filming effort.
Musicians Joey Kneiser and Kelly Smith from the Nashville-based band Glossary and Austin Lucas were recorded as they sang several acoustic songs and spoke about how they have risen above substance abuse and other difficulties in their lives.
“I used to get in a lot of trouble when I was younger, and I think it was music that pulled me out of it,” said Mr. Lucas, who is a son of Mad River Theater Works producing director Bob Lucas.
“I wrote a song about my hometown, Bloomington, Indiana, where heroin also is a big problem. There is a big influx of drugs there because it’s a college town. Some of the people I grew up with now are gone, and others are still struggling with it.”
The new documentary will continue an effort that was started in 2014 as a Logan County Family Court intervention program for youths led by local videographer Chris Westhoff, who also is the LoCo Art director. Through the afterschool project, the teens have taken a look at a variety of topics, including skateboarding, the Top of Ohio Pet Shelter and one of their final products last year, entitled, “Dream Bigger: The Making of A Mural.”
