Two Examiner staff writers and the newspaper are finalists for seven awards in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors’ 2015 newspaper contest.
Joel E. Mast and Reuben Mees each are finalists in three categories in Division II for newspapers with daily circulation of 8,000 to 12,999. Both are finalists in the Best News Writer category.
Mr. Mees, who has a total of 12 years as an Examiner writer, also was named a finalist in Best Spot News Coverage for Underage Drinking Party Homicide and Best Enterprise Reporting for Sober Living.
Mr. Mast, a 23-year newsroom employee, is a finalist in the Best Feature Writer category and Best Investigative Reporting for Adriel Adrift.
The newspaper is a finalist for Best Headline Writer.
Both writers are multiple past winners in the competition. Every member of the Examiner’s editorial and sports staff have earned a least one individual writing award in their careers.
The awards in actual order of finish — first, second and third places — will be announced at the Ohio APME annual awards banquet May 15 in Columbus. The General Excellence and First Amendment winners also will be announced at the meeting.
Seventy-two daily newspapers submitted 2,239 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2015.
Entries were judged by editors from the San Angelo (Texas) Standard-Times and the Niagara-Gazette (Niagara Falls, New York), Division II.
