A Columbus man with prior convictions could face a life sentence if convicted on a recent 12-count indictment which carries firearm specifications and repeat violent offender classifications.
Dewaughn I. Morgan, 24, currently lodged in the Logan County Jail, was charged in a Logan County grand jury indictment with five counts of first-degree felony kidnapping and three counts of second-degree felonious assault. Each of the eight felony counts have enhancements for possessing a firearm while committing a felony, using a firearm to commit a felony and a repeated violent offender specification.
If the enhancements are applied upon conviction on the charges, Morgan could face up to 32 additional years in prison for the firearms specifications and a life sentence as a repeat violent offender.
The grand jury indictment also charged Morgan with assault, a felony of the fourth degree; carrying a concealed weapon, a felony of the fourth degree; and two counts of having weapons while under disability, felonies of the third degree.
Morgan was arrested Nov. 28 after a traffic stop on U.S. Route 33 near East Liberty.
The Logan County Prosecutor’s Office investigated his past and learned about a 2016 felonious assault conviction in Allen County. Morgan also was convicted in 2010 of a delinquency count of rape in Franklin County.
His most recent arrest occurred after deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office stopped a 20-year-old female motorist from Sidney for an unreadable license plate around 12:25 a.m. There was a 14-year-old girl in the vehicle with the driver and Morgan.
Morgan was unable to provide any identification and lied about his name. He admitted to smoking marijuana which led deputies to conduct probable cause search of the vehicle.
A 9 mm handgun was found in the glove box in front of Morgan’s location inside the vehicle, deputies report.
He and the driver were taken into custody after both denied ownership of the gun.
Once at the Logan County Jail, the driver told deputies she and the 14-year-old were held captive at gunpoint in the car and at locations in Columbus before setting out for Lima.
He reportedly held the gun against the driver’s head and struck her with it around 10 times.
Deputies noted there were blond hairs on the gun similar to the victim’s hair.
