Durward Michael “Mike” Durnell, 68, went home to be with the Lord on March 13, 2016, at James Cancer Hospital, Columbus, where he peacefully slipped away surrounded by his family after a very brief battle with cancer.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Peggy and Durward Durnell.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Mary “Candi” and children, Mike (Kim) Durnell, David (Angela) Durnell and Candace (Paul) Hackenburg; stepchildren, Jennifer (D.J.) Newman and Michelle (Brian) Gaerke; siblings, Christina, Lanny (Linda) and John Durnell, Lois Duncan, Rita Scherer and Nancy Sue (Tom) Pagnard; and many nieces and nephews, who loved him very much. He will be very missed by his seven grandchildren, Joshua, Aubree, Baylee, Sydnee, Austin, Ethan and Kensey Durnell; and five stepgrandchildren, Seth and Lexi Newman, and Collin, Brandon and Madison Gaerke.
Mike was truly the head of the family, who went about every day taking care of everyone. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was the perfect example of what a man should be and will be very missed.
Mike was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War. He love nature and was a member of the Sierra Club, along with being a lifelong Cleveland Browns and Ohio Buckeyes fan.
Visitation is one hour prior to a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Calvary Baptist Church, Bellefontaine.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
