Michael D. Weaks, 43, of 829 County Road 5, Zanesfield, was charged Saturday with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and failure to comply after a 1:15 a.m. traffic stop for a marked lanes violation.
An officer on patrol observed a sport utility vehicle cross Main Street at Lake Avenue at a speed in excess of 25 mph. The officer followed the SUV and observed it travel over the white fog line and the double yellow center line several times before turning northbound on Ludlow Road. More lane violations were observed as the vehicle traveled north to Brennan Road.
The officer reports turning on his cruiser’s overhead emergency lights and sounded its siren to initiate a stop on eastbound Brennan, but it took 40 seconds for Weaks to pull over.
Upon contact, the officer noted a strong odor of alcohol and noted the motorist had a hard handling questions for proof of insurance and his driver’s license. He was asked to exit the SUV but forgot to unbuckle his safety belt. Once outside, he lost his balance and fell backwards into the vehicle. He continued to stumble as he made his way to the front of the officer’s cruiser.
Field sobriety tests indicated he was impaired by alcohol and he was taken into custody. He refused to participate in further testing.
The SUV owner, Erika Cummins of East Liberty, was a passenger but unable to drive. The vehicle was parked and she too was transported to the police department to wait for a sober friend.
Motorist cited in crash
David M. Shamblin, 48, of Bellefontaine, was cited for failure to yield while turning left after an 8:15 p.m. Monday two-car crash on Main Street at Lincoln Avenue.
Officers report he was northbound and started a left turn onto Lincoln. His car traveled into the path of a southbound Randy P. Patrick, 32, of Bellefontaine.
Sara Jones, 26, of Marysville, a passenger in the Patrick car, reported possible injuries but she was not transported for treatment, according to the crash report.
Damage was heavy to the cars.
Woman faces assault charge
Kathryn A. Parker, 32, of 709 W. Columbus Ave., was charged Tuesday with assault.
Officers met with Zachary Pope of Huntsville around 1:50 p.m. at the police department. He had visible fresh scratch marks on his neck and he told them he encountered the suspect, who is an ex-girlfriend and mother of Pope’s child, as she was paying a bill at China Grill Buffet, 2087 S. Main St.
She allegedly put the palm of a hand to Pope’s neck to push him away when he said hello to his child and told him to leave. She called the police and followed Pope to his vehicle to take photographs of it and him.
A restaurant employee confirmed there was altercation between the two.
Officers met with her at her parent’s city home and she reportedly admitted to pushing on Pope’s neck after asking him to move away from her and her children.
