Dr. Evan W. Dixon has been providing medical care and education to colleagues, medical students, hospital staff, patients and the community for more than 50 years.
To recognize Dr. Dixon and his many contributions of service and education, the Dr. Evan Dixon Medical Education Fund was recently established through a private donation to Mary Rutan Foundation. The focus of the fund is fostering clinical education, as demonstrated during his medical career.
“Dr. Evan Dixon has given of his time and expertise in raising the standard of medical care in Logan County for nearly 40 years,” said Mandy Goble, MRH president and CEO.
“His devotion and leadership in medical education has significantly impacted cardiovascular services at Mary Rutan Hospital and the lives of our patients. We are honored to pay tribute to Dr. Dixon through the establishment of this fund, in recognition of his many contributions.”
The honoree began his medical career as an intern and resident at The Ohio State University Hospital in 1967 and through active military service as a physician in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1969 to 1971, where he continued to serve in the Reserve until 2003.
In 1975, Dr. Dixon began a Hospital-based consultative practice in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio.
During his three-year tenure there, Dr. Dixon served as the director of cardiopulmonary services and coronary care, as medical advisor for Southeast Ohio Emergency Services, as the assistant professor of medicine for Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and as clinical instructor of medicine for the Ohio State University Hospitals.
Prior to coming to Logan County, Dr. Dixon completed his Cardiology Fellowship at OSU.
He then entered private practice of Cardiology Associates in Bellefontaine in 1982, now known as OSU Cardiology of Bellefontaine, joining Dr. Harry Graber and sharing a vision for a top-notch cardiology department in a small community. He brought fresh ideas and started many noteworthy services during the 1980s.
Dr. Dixon performed electrophysiology studies, partnered with Dr. Graber in implanting permanent pacing devices, originated the nuclear cardiology imaging/stress program and on-site vascular ultrasound services at Mary Rutan Hospital; and over the years, provided care for many Logan and surrounding county residents.
Through the years, Dr. Dixon participated in a number of OSU-affiliated activities that directly involved MRH. He spent countless hours training OSU Internal Medicine Residents, wrote grants for MRH’s cardiology department and programming, and acted as the regional director for advanced cardiac life support; which includes Ohio Northern University pharmacy students, MRH staff and multi-county health and EMS workers.
Dr. Dixon spent many years as medical director of Mary Rutan Hospital’s cardiology department, respiratory care department, nuclear cardiology and vascular labs, heart failure clinic, chest pain center and intensive care unit. He wrote many protocols and procedures for the hospital and was active in long-range strategic planning for the advancement and quality of cardiovascular care offered in our community today.
His dedication to service is no different outside of the hospital’s walls, representatives related. Through his military service, as a member of the United States Army Reserve Medical Corp, Dr. Dixon performed yearly functions at Ft. Bragg, N.C., including teaching Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support.
He trained Army medical units, Advanced Burn and Chemical Causality management staff, prior to and during Desert Storm. Dr. Dixon retired from his military career in 2003 as a full Colonel and received three commendation and distinguished service awards.
Locally, for many years, Dr. Dixon has participated in numerous community education and outreach efforts and provided West Liberty- Salem Junior and Senior High School students with sports physicals as well as providing assistance in dissecting hearts for the WLS Biology students. He served on the WLS school board for a number of years.
