Indian Lake High School students received a “no excuses” message this week during an inspirational assembly aimed at spurring them to overcome obstacles.

Speaker Brad Hurtig was a tough, young football player in northwest Ohio when an industrial accident took both of his hands and much of his arms. As a double amputee, he wears prosthetics today, but he hasn’t let those hold him back.
The presenter told the students, “How you react to diversity defines your life.”
After multiple surgeries, Mr. Hurtig returned to football practice to watch his teammates during the summer. When he wanted a drink from a water bottle that was on the ground, a coach told him, “If you’re thirsty enough, you’ll find a way.”
The athlete realized he wasn’t helpless and he decided he would not let his accident become an excuse to fail.
“Excuses only get us by so long in life. You’ve got to find a way. And if we’re not going to find a way, we often find excuses.”
