Logan County Sheriff’s Office is soon receiving a new police dog following the death of former canine officer Cane in November.
Sheriff Randy Dodds announced Thursday that a new dog would be arriving in three weeks.
The dog cost the sheriff’s office a total of $21,000 for the dog, training and other necessary materials.
The new canine replaces Cane, who passed away Nov. 14, 2019, following a short illness.
Deputy and handler Cole Piatt said during Cane’s December funeral the seven-month-old German shepherd still had a lot of puppy left in him when he died.
“It was the worst day when he passed away,” Piatt said.
Cane was a German shepherd from Slovakia Republic in Central Europe.
He started his career at the sheriff’s office Aug. 8, 2019, and was trained at the Von der Haus Gill German Shepherds & Police K9 Academy in Wapakoneta and became state certified for duty Sept. 25, 2019.
After Cane’s death, officials said the department’s renewed canine program would not perish.
Piatt estimated to begin working with a new canine sometime in March.
