Heartland residents get Valentine totes from Indian Lake school group
Heartland of Bellefontaine residents had a reason to smile over the Valentine’s Day weekend after a group of volunteers from Indian Lake schools made their way through the halls with a special delivery.

“That really surprised me. It was very nice of them to come here and do this,” resident Betty Wilt said after Key Club president Kim Garrison dropped off a Cupid Care Bin in her room.
“Some of the residents don’t really have anyone who comes to visit them; so, it is nice to know someone cares,” said Kim, an Indian Lake High School senior.
The effort was organized by Indian Lake Elementary music teacher Tracey Notestine, who said she wanted to give back to the Heartland residents who were friends of her grandfather Robert Hatfield, who passed away Jan. 20 after spending about 16 months at the senior care facility.
“When I would come out here and see my grandfather before he died, this was something I thought I would like to do for them on Valentine’s,” Ms. Notestine said.
She began organizing the effort and was able to find 63 sponsors, including the high school’s Key Club group, a sixth-grade class and various individuals. She used bonuses for being a salesperson for the accessories company Thirty-One to provide 79 total gifts.
The Cupid Care Bins were Thirty-One brand’s Oh Snap! bins that can be buttoned to a wheelchair, walker or bedside, Ms. Notestine said. The Key Club provided word find books and stress balls while the sixth-graders wrote personal Valentine notes. Other items in the bins included hand sanitizer, lip balm, chocolate mints, tissues, shampoo and ink pens.
“I love it,” resident Eva Kennedy said of her gift. “ We’ve had several nice surprises out here this weekend.”
