A CrossFit competition Saturday at Bellefontaine High School took a major toll on the floor in the main gymnasium.
As a result, the school’s basketball teams are not sure when they will be able to play in front of their home fans again.
Mad River CrossFit of Bellefontaine hosted the “Proven at the Peak” event Saturday. Thick mats were used in an effort to protect the floor, but that proved to be insufficient as numerous spots across the floor were dented and cracked.
“There have been similar events here and we were under the understanding that the facility would hold up to the equipment being used,” said BHS athletic director Matt Comstock. “But the repeated dropping of heavy weights in the same spots over and over again caused more stress than the floor could handle.”
The home boys basketball game against Vandalia-Butler was postponed Saturday night in wake of the damage. A makeup date has not yet been set.
Bellefontaine was scheduled to host Urbana for a boys basketball game Tuesday night, but that contest will now be played at Indian Lake.
The home girls basketball game against Graham that was scheduled for Wednesday has been rescheduled for Feb. 8.
The home wrestling meet Thursday against Urbana is expected to go on as scheduled.
“We have a company coming (today) to look at the floor and we are going to take a wait-and-see approach (regarding future events) until we know what it is going to take to get the floor playable again,” said Comstock. “From conversations over the phone, they are optimistic that it can be a pretty quick process to get it in playable condition soon. As for a long-term fix, we will have to wait to see what information we receive from the repair company.”
Financing the repairs is something that has yet to be ironed out, but Comstock said that “the renter had to show proof of insurance to protect both the competitors from injury as well as the facility from damage.”
