The Logan County Commissioners and the Union County Humane Society have ironed out a deal that will allow local dogs to be taken to the Marysville shelter at least through the end of the year.

While the contract finalizing the deal had not been received or signed by commissioners by the end of the business day Tuesday, Commissioner Dustin Wickersham said the expected terms are that Logan County will pay the nonprofit Union County agency $6,250 a month to accept animals taken in by the Logan County dog warden.
He said he and fellow commissioners expect to sign the agreement on Thursday — the same day the Top of Ohio Pet Shelter will stop accepting animals. The local shelter, which is run by the nonprofit Humane Society Serving Logan County, sent commissioners a letter a month ago giving the required 30-day notice that it was terminating its contract to accept dogs.
The agreement with the Union County shelter is for the remainder of 2016 but Mr. Wickersham said the county will likely seek to extend the agreement through 2017 if it works well in the coming months.
