Clayton C. Hughes, 100, of Rushsylvania, passed away Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, at Logan Acres Care Center in Bellefontaine.
Born Sept. 29, 1915, near Waynesfield, he was a son of the late C. Freeman and Eva Marie Kemp Hughes.
In 1918, his family moved to Rushsylvania and he was a 1934 graduate of Rushsylvania High School. He attended the Rushsylvania United Methodist Church and retired from the NYC Railroad. Clayton loved his fishing trips to Minnesota, which he had done for 70 years. He will be remembered as an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Browns and the Benjamin Logan Raiders.
On June 12, 1937, in North Lewisburg, he married his wife of 75 Years, Betty Jane Pugh, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 2012. Also preceding him in death was a daughter, Connie Jenkins; son-in-law, Richard Jenkins; a brother, Calvin Kepple Hughes; sisters, Dale Cahaley, Eythel White and Pauline (Bill) Kramer; sister-in-law, Donna (Sam) Fry; and brother-in-law, Lowell (Donna) Pugh.
Surviving are his son, Joe (Linda) Hughes of New Jerusalem; granddaughters, Susie Jenkins, Julie (Bill) Zuerner, Kris (Nathan) Schrader, Amy (Scott) Fecher, Jennifer (Nate) Kearns and Betsy (Luke) Reames; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Helen (Carl) Culp.
Clayton was very blessed to have his generous neighbors, Brian Rader, Grizz Stewart and Forrest Batton and his niece, Jane Perry, who made his final years at home possible.
Funeral services begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Wilson Funeral Home, Schnurrenberger Chapel, 222 W. Center St., West Mansfield, where calling is 30 minutes before the service. Tommy Lawrence will officiate and burial will take place at a later date in the Rushsylvania Cemetery.
