Administrative changes mark transition to new year
A bottle of water and crisp apple may soon replace “suicide” soft drinks and Cow Tails as the snack of choice for youths using Bellefontaine’s city parks and swimming pool if a plan by parks and health officials catches on.
Parks Superintendent Kris Myers told the Bellefontaine Joint Parks and Recreation District Board on Tuesday that as part of a Healthy Habits, Healthy You Coalition initiative, the city parks is trying to implement healthy food options at its concession stands.
“We’re talking about being a pacesetter in Logan County for what are healthy options,” Mr. Myers said of the Healthy Habits coalition, of which he is co-chairman. It was born of recent community surveys conducted by Mary Rutan Hospital, other community partners and local health agencies.
“From the parks’ standpoint, we are looking at the concession stands and what we can do to offer healthier options,” he said. “It’s really kind of an exciting thing to be involved with.”
