City paramedics soon will have lifting assistance as the Bellefontaine City Council members voted Tuesday to spend up to $29,000 for equipment that will be installed in one of the city’s squads.
Bellefontaine Fire & EMS Department Chief Andy Fissel said cot lifting systems are the wave of the future.
It provides greater safety for the paramedics and the patients, he said.
Paramedics will no longer have to strain to hoist heavier patients and the mechanism lifts cots and patients smoothly into the squad.
There have been a few instances in which patients have been dropped while trying to load them on squads, Chief Fissel said.
The first system will be fully conditioned and carry a one-year warranty from Stryker EMS. Such systems normally cost upwards of $50,000.
