The final of seven criminal cases stemming from an unsanctioned parade that followed a street racing death last summer was resolved this week, the Bellefontaine Municipal Prosecutor’s Office reports.
A total of five of the cases resulted in convictions while two were dismissed, Lucretia Grogan of the prosecutor’s office said.
On the night of Aug. 23 — the evening after 21-year-old Brett Metz, 27, of Sidney, died in an early morning motorcycle crash while fleeing local authorities who were investigating illegal road racing — a large group of people congregated on the south side of Bellefontaine.
Various members of the group would block off intersections and interfere with traffic to allow a parade intended to honor Mr. Metz to pass through the city without proper parade permits, authorities reported at the time of the incidents.
A total of seven people were charged with rioting and obstructing official business in connection with that illegal parade. They were: Norman E. McClain Jr., 21, of 22 E. High Ave.; Nickolas B. Kline, 22, of 5989 N. State Route 235, Lewistown; Trenton R. Stahler, 23, of 401 Dodge Ave.; Carter A. Hogue, 19, of 228 Carter Ave.; Aaron J. Allen, 19, of 501 S. Troy Road; Charles A. Gilliam, 21, of 2720 Township Road 136; and Nathan M. Asman, 20, of 1133 E. Township Road 190.
Mr. McClain, a reported leader of the loosely-organized street racing ring, was also charged with obstructing official business and persistent disorderly conduct after a related disturbance in a downtown parking lot around 1:30 a.m. Aug. 24.
