Calvary Christian’s girls basketball team captured the Ohio Valley Christian Conference championship Monday after defeating Dominion Academy 49-32 and improve to 28-3 on the season.
“Our girls are really focused right now,” said Calvary head coach Eli Carter. “We are playing great team basketball. We know where we need to be defensively and our rotations and help-side defense is like poetry in motion.”
Dominion Academy scored the first basket of the opening quarter, but Calvary went on a 9-0 run after that to take a 9-2 lead. The Spartans outscored Dominion 15-8 in the second quarter to build a 24-10 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Dominion Academy was able to edge Calvary 9-8, but still trailed the Spartans 32-19. Calvary Christian pulled away in the final period with 17-13 effort to seal the win.
“Elisha Carter got lot of good outside looks and she connected,” said Carter. “Winning our first conference and regional championship is something these kids have worked extremely hard for all year. While we won this game, we have more to prove this weekend as we play for a state championship.”
Elisha Carter finished the game with 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Spartans. Hannah Marlow had 11 points with 11 rebounds and Erin Young chipped in six points.
Calvary Christian competes for the Ohio Christian Schools Athletic Association state championship this weekend at Ohio Christian University in Circleville.
